Visitors and visits

Every visit with its route through your site, one visit as a story, labels and notes, and all visits of the same visitor.

The visitor list

The Visitors tab (/app/<your-domain>/visitors) shows every visit, grouped by day: time, flag, city or country, source, the route through your pages, duration and number of actions. Long routes are shortened to “+N pages” with the real exit page after it. Goals that were reached appear as badges under the route.

  • Click a country, source, device or goal to filter the list.
  • 50 visits at a time; load more at the bottom.
  • j and k move through the list, Enter opens a visit.

API: GET /v1/sites/{site}/sessions (up to 200 per page, with a cursor).

Choose what each row shows

Under View, tick the details you want: device, goals reached, network or company, browser and operating system, language, screen width, campaign and whether someone is returning. By default device, goals, network and returning are on. Your browser remembers your choice.

A visit as a story

Open a visit to read it as it happened (/app/<your-domain>/visits/<id>):

  • One sentence sums it up: where someone came in, how many pages in how much time, and how it ended.
  • A timeline shows every page and action, the time in between, the time on each page and how far they scrolled.
  • Long visits show the beginning and the end; the steps in between open with one click.
  • On the side: device, browser, operating system, screen, language, network and entry page.

Esc takes you back to the list. API: GET /v1/sites/{site}/sessions/{id}.

How a visit ended

When a visit ends with a click to another site or a download, Nvivio says so in the words of the link: “left via ‘Book now’ to booking.com”. You see whether someone gave up or went on to your booking system, shop or partner. This works when outbound links and downloads are measured (the default, see Events). API: left_via in sessions and realtime.

Labels and notes

Give a visitor a label, such as “Client X” or “Me”, and a note for your team. The label then appears in place of the city in Visitors, Live and the Overview.

  • Open a visit › Add label (up to 60 characters). Editors, admins and owners can add labels.
  • Filter on a label with label:<name> in the address or the API.
  • In privacy mode a label applies to that day, because the visitor gets a new code after midnight.

API: PUT /v1/sites/{site}/visitors/{id}/label.

All visits of the same visitor

Next to a visit you see the other visits of that visitor (up to 20), whether they are new or returning, and since when. In privacy mode these are today’s visits (Visits today); in cookie mode the whole history (All visits). See Privacy.
