Nvivio does not see your badge

You placed the Nvivio badge, but Badge and referrals says it is not seen. The checks it has to pass, and how to fix the usual causes.

The Nvivio badge only counts when Nvivio sees it: the badge’s script checks that it is really visible on your site and reports that, and Nvivio notes it at most once an hour. Badge and referrals, in the menu under your email address, shows when and on which page it was last seen. If it says the badge is not seen, check these in order.

1. Is the badge script on the page?

The badge needs its script line, also when you use the plain HTML link: the line only checks the link and draws nothing then.

<div id="nvivio-badge"></div>
<script defer src="https://nviv.io/badge.js" data-site="NV-XXXXXXX"></script>
  • View the page source and search for badge.js. Not there? Empty your page cache, or publish your tag manager container.
  • Keep data-site with your site’s code, as the copied code has it. Without it, the script takes the code from the Nvivio script in the page’s HTML, which does not work when a tag manager adds that script later.
  • On WordPress, the Nvivio plugin places both for you.

2. Is it on your site’s own domain?

Only a badge on one of the site’s domains counts, not on a copy of your site or on localhost. A badge on a subdomain, such as shop.example.com, counts for the organisation that measures example.com, unless shop.example.com is a site of its own.

3. Is it really visible?

The script checks that the badge is laid out on the page, at least 40 by 10 pixels, not hidden, not more than half transparent and not covered by something else. Common causes:

  • Hidden on purpose or by accident: display: none or visibility: hidden on the badge or on an element around it, an opacity below 0.5, or no room, for example in a footer column that collapses on a phone.
  • Covered: a chat button, a cookie banner or a sticky bar on top of it. In the bottom right corner, the badge competes with chat widgets: put it in your footer instead, in an element with id="nvivio-badge".

A footer below the fold is fine: the badge does not have to be on screen, only on the page.

4. Give it time

After a fix, open a page with the badge yourself. Badge and referrals shows it as seen once the script reports it. For a discount on a paid plan the badge must stay visible over the period (What it gives): seen on at least 90% of the days your site had visitors, and never gone for more than 7 days in a row.
