Goals and funnels

Measure what makes a visit valuable, see which sources convert, and find the step where people drop off.

Goals

A goal is what makes a visit valuable: viewing a page (a wildcard is allowed, for example /blog/*) or an event (for example signup). You can give it a value in euros. For each goal you see how many visitors reached it, the conversion rate (CR) and the total value.

Set up goals in Settings › Goals (/app/<your-domain>/settings#goals). Nvivio suggests pages and events from your data of the last 30 days.

  • A name of 1 to 60 characters, unique per site.
  • Paths are case-sensitive.
  • Results appear on the Overview and in Reports › Goals and funnels.

API: GET and POST /v1/sites/{site}/goals, DELETE /v1/sites/{site}/goals/{id}.

Goals from events your site already sends

No goals yet? Then Goals and funnels on the Overview lists the events your site already sends. One click turns one into a goal, so you do not have to remember event names.

Click a goal to filter everything

Click a goal and the whole dashboard shows only the visits that reached it. The panels and their full tables then show conversions and CR per source, page, country or device, so you see in one click where your best visitors come from.

In the address: goal:<name>, or goal:!<name> for the visits that did not reach it. In Reports, Conversions for adds the same columns to every report.

Funnels

A funnel follows 2 to 8 steps, in order, within one visit, for example pricing → sign up → signed up. For each step you see the visitors, the share of those who started, and how many dropped off. The step with the largest drop-off is highlighted.

  • Create funnels in Settings › Funnels (#funnels). An existing goal can be added as a step with one click.
  • View them on the Overview or in Reports › Goals and funnels › Funnels.
  • Deleting a funnel asks for confirmation first.

API: GET and POST /v1/sites/{site}/funnels, GET /v1/sites/{site}/funnels/{id}, DELETE /v1/sites/{site}/funnels/{id}.

When something breaks

Insights warn you when a funnel step suddenly lets far fewer people through (or nobody), or when a goal is reached far less often or not at all. Those go to the top of the list, with a suggestion to try the step yourself.

Goals on Your websites

Sites with goals show on their card on Your websites how many visitors reached a goal in the period, added up over the goals, with the split per goal when you hover.
